The territory

Land of myths and legends, rich in natural parks, archaeological sites and medieval villages, the province of Latina is the perfect combination of stunning mountains and famous seaside destinations like Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo, Sperlonga, Gaeta e Terracina, already known and appreciated to the Roman times.

Here there is the Circeo National Park that it was established in 1934. The Park prevented the total deforestation of the “Selva di Terracina” caused by the huge work for the drainage of the Pontine Marshes.

The “Selva di Terracina” is still the only example of natural lowland forest in Italy.

Of particular interest is the fine sand Littoral Dune which runs for 25 Km along the coast and it is characterized by a thick Mediterranean maquis.

Behind the dune there is wetland composed of four coastal lakes (Paola, Caprolace, Monaci, Fogliano) and several areas denominated pools that are seasonally flooded by rainwater.

The “wet zone” of international importance has been included in the RAMSAR convention as a suitable environment for the pause, the wintering and the nidification of migratory birds and rare species as the osprey, the peregrine falcon, the sea eagle, the flamingo, the crane...

A few miles away and easily reachable by boat we find the archipelago of the Pontine Islands formed by two groups of islands: to the north the are Ponza, Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi, and to the south Ventotene and Santo Stefano with their marine protected areas.

The territory can also boasts about important fossils and prehistoric finding like the skull of the Neanderthal man collected in the “Homo Sapiens et Habitat” permanent exhibition in San Felice Circeo.

The archaeological finds are related to the Roman Times. The Villa of Domitian built in the first century AD which has interesting spas, huge tanks and a bathing resort building. The natural monument of the Garden of Ninfa with the Roman temple dedicated to the gods of spring waters. And also the harbourr area of Torre Paola, the ancient road layouts, installation plannings and religious buildings.

In our territory it has been found also archaeological finds of prehistoric (Neolithic) age and then of the Etruscan and Roman time which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Nettuno. This means that in our land there were human settlements since that times.

Even today it is not difficult to find some findings everytime the ground is plowed deeply.
